Breaking: Liam Rosenior Sacked
This was unexpected and a shock to the fanbase. After just under two years in charge and recently signing a three-year contract in December 2023, Liam Rosenior has been given the boot, despite being nominated for Manager of the Year. Sky Sports announced this at 3pm today and the club tweeted the following: ‘Hull City can confirm that we have parted ways with Head Coach, Liam Rosenior, with immediate effect.’
This is a kick in the teeth and probably one of the worst decisions made by our owner: the 39-year old became boss in November 2022 when the club was sinking into the mire; he was able to rescue us that season and steer us to 15th. Then, he had his first season in charge, in which he beat other teams in the league to draw in some brilliant players (Philogene, Carvalho, Tyler Morton and Liam Delap) and was able to finish the season in 7th, which was our best run in the Championship in years. Consequently, with aid from our owner, he was able to bring our fanbase back together by filling the stadium every week and making thousands of fans travel across the country to watch this exciting team. He brought togetherness to the club and a real positive energy.
Rosenior has always stated how he admires our club and the connections he has with it: he used to play for us and his nan was from Hull. He was also certain after the 23/24 campaign he was going to be at the helm next season to help us build on this incredible year. So, if he had no indications of wanting to leave, then why has he been sacked?
Perhaps Acun made a pledge with him at the beginning of the season about his aims of the Premier League and if he did not meet it, he would be sacked. But, this is obscene as they seemed to have a great bond and it was certain that Acun would stick with him, especially after signing a contract which would see him at the club until 2026.
Critics of Rosenior have been saying throughout the season, especially towards the latter stages when we brought in some magnificent players, that we have an expensive squad, packed with talent, yet we play boring football and did not make the playoffs. I somewhat concur with this argument as we should have been higher in the league, however, it was his first full season in charge as a manager, the players needed time to gel and we cannot expect to go up in his first year.
The club is yet to announce why they have made this decision and Sky Sports has contacted them for further comment.
What is next for the club? Not only have we lost a great manager, most of our loan players will go back to their clubs (Connolly has announced he is leaving, there have been rumours of Carvalho going back to Liverpool and it looks likely Morton is not staying after his recent Instagram post). What started as a bright and hopeful future for Hull City has now been dampened by this decision.
For me, Rosenior was our only hope at getting into the playoffs next season; it will be hard to find someone like him. I really hope Acun knows what he is doing.
